Public Technology reported that the British government’s election integrity program has launched procurement activities to develop digital services for identity verification and the issuance of voter cards for people who do not have any other form of photo ID. In the next two years, suppliers can obtain contracts worth up to £3.75 million (US$5.2 million), but it is not clear how these technologies will work.

This move is accompanied by expected legislative changes that will require people to prove their identity when voting, and in countries where voter fraud is almost non-existent, such a requirement is not currently required. There is no national or national ID system in the UK.

The Cabinet Office is currently overseeing the technical research phase and may retain its designated current suppliers or open a new tender for the testing phase, which will cover implementation, testing and security. These services are expected to be launched in early 2023 to enable mandatory identity verification in local elections.

The bidding process for the alpha phase of the delivery of the free photo ID card has ended. The bidding for the identity verification process and the bidding for the contract to improve the existing registration voting online service will end on November 5.

The Cabinet Office is also seeking solutions from companies so that political parties can add "digital imprints" to any online campaign materials. These digital tags will show who paid and made online advertisements as a way to resolve online misinformation surrounding elections. After the Election Commission warned of threats to democracy after the 2018 general election, the Cabinet Office conducted technical consultations on the issue.

The UK paved the way for the overall digital system by creating a trust framework.

This year, some countries in the world have introduced or planned to conduct voter verification, especially biometric technology.
